Hi, a friend and I are planning a holiday to Dubai, and we were wondering what the night life would be like with us being gay males? (which isn't that great but man, that was, like, the dream of the '90s) or because I was obsessed with coding as a teen (shut up, I was so cool, you guys) or because I work too much or because I'm hardly ever at bars unless I'm performing and even then, when someone hits on me it's like throwing flirtation into the wind and hoping it lands somewhere near my brain. Seriously, if I had a dime for every time a friend told me, "Lane, they were hitting on you!!!

The mainstream discourse on the political economy of drugs has emphasised the negative correlation between drug production and state capacity, with the presence of a thriving drugs trade seen as both a sign and a cause of weak states.

Through an analysis of the drugs trade in Burma this study argues that such an approach is deeply flawed.

We use monthly wages and commodity prices at the provincial level over the period 2003-2009 and look for their response to conflict events and ISAF deployment. Crop sales, shortages and peasant portfolio behaviour: An analysis of Angola.

Two basic results emerge: first, commodity prices are not significantly affected by insurgent violence, which is consistent with coping strategies already in place. The Journal of Development Studies, 30(2), 361{379.

One the one hand, this pushes people further into poverty and undermines their efforts to earn a living; on the other, it leads to more stationary forms of predation as a result of post-war integration of such protection rackets into national state government.

In Eastern Congo, history appears to repeat itself.

Focusing on the period since the 1988 protests it argues that the illicit nature of the drugs trade has provided the state with an array of incentives (legal impunity, protection, money laundering) and threats (of prosecution) with which to co-opt and coerce insurgent groups over which it has otherwise commanded little authority.

Their weak administrative institutions and fragile legal and judicial systems mean that they lack the capacity to effectively investigate and punish corrupt behaviour.

Rather than being a sign of corruption-induced state incapacity, the state's involvement in the drugs trade has thus become a central arena through which state power has been constructed and reproduced.

Observers often agree that ‘history repeats itself’[1] in Eastern Congo – from the slavery conditions imposed by Belgian King Leopold over Mobutu’s predatory state, to today’s armed militias.
